2-4 dimethylpentane is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H16. It is also known as iso-octane, a highly combustible liquid with a clear colorless appearance. Iso-octane is a branched-chain alkane with five carbon atoms and two methyl groups attached to the second and fourth carbon atoms, respectively. It is primarily used as an additive in gasoline to enhance its octane rating, a measure of its resistance to engine knock. Iso-octane has a boiling point of 99 °C and a density of 0.692 g/mL. It is also used as a solvent in the production of industrial chemicals and a standard reference fuel for testing the performance of internal combustion engines.
